A new role for Ms Paltrow

I never used to be a fan of Gwyneth Paltrow, but over the last few years I've found myself somewhat in awe of her.

She first captured my attention when she arrived at the Iron Man premiere with newly bobbed hair, sporting a rather short black lacy Balmain dress and particularly high heels. This was not the type of attire we were used to seeing Ms Paltrow in.

Gwyn had always been one for the 'comfort-not-glamour' school; opting for androgynous blazers, plain shirt dresses and even vest tops on the red carpet. She had never been a style icon.

Bring of the Gwyn of 2008. What was so brilliant about the outfits of that year was Gwyn's ability to mix a hint of fun and originality with a real understanding of her own personal style, age and shape. Not once in the star's attempt to glamorise her wardrobe did she dress too young for her age, never did she appear uncomfortable or outlandish in her choices. Yet, the outfits were always a little suggestive and surprisingly on-trend.

This was honestly the first occasion I began to take more notice of the actress (despite always having enjoyed her films). But put that to one side, and she keeps on impressing. For a start, who knew this girl could sing? One word: Glee. And now, she's released her very own cook book Notes From my Kitchen Table.

I've recently become a little obsessed with cookbooks - I'm trying to teach myself to cook and some cookbooks are just beautiful to look at. I have a feeling Gwyneth's will be one of these. So I'm very keen to get my hands on a copy.

I've heard impressive reviews, suggesting the book is compulsive reading and that Gwyn has earned herself a reputation as a formidable foodie. So I'm keen to get my hands on a copy. In particular I'm looking forward to trying the tuna and ginger burgers, fudge chocolate brownies and crispy potato and garlic cake!

How stunning does Blake Lively look!?

In something a little bit bolder and brighter than her usual style, Ms Lively stole the show at the CinemaCon Awards Gala in Las Vegas this week.

This cap sleeved, tulle-ruffle Marchesa dress is both stylish and sexy. The short skirt length and almost see-through bodice show off enough skin to make this look red-hot. Yet, the luxurious silk fabric, beautiful deep red colour and lace-look embroidery make sure this outfit is nothing short of sophisticated glamour.

Blake let the dress do the talking opting for simple accessories, hair and make-up. A messy up do, feline eyes, a few white bracelets and white drop earrings were all the look required.

As I was just about to publish this post, I came across another equally gorgeous picture of Ms Lively at the awards - it seems this girl just couldn't narrow it down to only one outfit choice.

Working a white lace Dolce & Gabbana mini dress, white blazer and luscious Christian Dior shoe boots, Blake looked every inch a Hollywood star.

She has these looks down to a tee. What's great about both of these outfits is that Blake has managed to incorporate her own penchant for minis, statement dresses and simple hair and make-up with a red carpet worthy, A-lister look. This is textbook styling. She wows in classy creations, while maintaining the essence of her youth. Good work!

Blake was at the awards to collect her gong for Breakthrough Performer of the Year.

A New Leading Lady

I just had to post this picture of Amanda Seyfried at the premiere for her new film, Red Riding Hood. Miss Seyfried is spot on in the fashion stakes in this plum coloured Lavin dress.

I love the t-shirt style shape of the dress which adds a grungy, youthful feel to an otherwise sleek mini.

Accessorised with a fabulous statement necklace by Tom Binns, a messy up-do, dark nails and natural make-up. I'm not 100% sold on the shoes though. Usually, I can't get enough of items in nude. But for some reason, this pair leaves me a bit cold. I would have preferred something brighter and without the ankle strap - to me these look like ballet pumps with heels, and it just doesn't work.

Ever since Mama Mia and Dear John I've been a fan of this leading lady, and am looking forward to watching this fairytale flick when it hits cinemas from 15th April.

The Oscars 2011: Best Dressed

So the big night's all over and we all know who won the awards, but who gets a prize for best dressed...

First up is Best Actress winner, Natalie Portman, who wowed in a deep plum Rodarte gown. The soft fabric flowed beautifully over Natalie's baby bump to the floor, showing just a peep of her purple satin Jimmy Choos. The embellished low neckline and Tiffany tassel earrings added a bit of glamour to the beautifully low-key ensemble.

This wasn't love at first sight for me, but after closer inspection I can confirm Mila Kunis' place in the Best Dressed list. This pretty, lavender lace gown is a unique choice - feminine and a little bit sexy. Mila's simple up do sets the look off nicely.

It was good to see Sandra Bullock making a head start on this Spring's bright colours trend. Donning a structured, strapless Vera Wang, with matching coral lipstick, Sandra ensured all eyes were on her.

Amy Adams was stunning in this figure hugging, Sapphire blue L'Wren Scott gown. Encrusted with jewels and with a thigh high split, this dress shone on the red carpet. Amy gets extra points for daring accessorising - opting for a clashing turquoise stoned necklace and bracelet.

It's worth noting a few key trends that showcased at the awards last night. The return of the lady in red was one that couldn't be missed. Follow Zoe Saldana's lead and clash your red with a bright pink shoe or make yours evening appropriate by sticking to a dark crimson and some serious sequins a la Penelope Cruz.

Purple was another popular choice, and a personal favourite of mine for Spring. Scarlett Johansson worked the trend to the max in a seductive lace, backless Dolce and Gabana.

Style de la semaine

There has been some seriously stylish goings on in the world of celebrity this last week. With some celebs making a surprise first entry into the charts.

Carey Mulligan is one savvy fashionista. It seems like every other day she is appearing on a best dressed list, and with statement looks like this it is no surprise. Working a stunning red Prabel Gurun with ruffled corsage bodice, Carey picked up the Best Actress Award for her role in Never Let Me Go at the BIFAs in London. This look was all about understated items teamed together to create an elegant and breath-taking outfit. Like a true style icon, Carey teamed the simple silk dress with black peep toe heels and a modern printed clutch.

Liv Tyler opted for a cheeky, flirty number at a charity event in New York. I just love this yellow feathery skirt with silver embellished belt. Liv kept the rest of her outfit simple, teaming the skirt with a black blazer, black tee, opaque tights and black heels. Hair was kept minimalist to ensure all eyes were on the fun party skirt, but Liv couldn't resist a flash of red lipstick - suits you Miss.

Going from strength to strength in the style department, Girls Aloud singer Kimberly Walsh shows us what she's made of this week. Miss Walsh upped her style credentials at the British Fashion Awards teaming nude heels and clutch with a strapless bustier top and a bright, jewel green silk skirt. An outfit that on paper should not work, looked fabulous and was polished off perfectly with long glossy curls, a flash of sexy red lips and delicate gold drop earrings.

Other stars of the show this week include Blake Lively at the Annual Footwear Awards in New York. Ms Lively shone in a Prabal Gurung metallic green wrap around mini dress. The highlight of her outfit, however, were the mouth watering tan and black patterned Christian Louboutin shoeboot heels.

Sporting a bandage purple silk and sheer lace Zuhair Murad creation, Katie Perry sizzles somewhere between sexy and demure at the Jingle Ball in LA. Her hair and make-up show her winning credentials, and the Brian Atwood nude heels finish it all off perfectly.

Everybody's wearing... White Shirts

If someone told me at the start of this season that the one item I'd need was a white shirt, I would have hibernated in my polar bear PJ's with the new box set of Gossip Girl, and no-one would have heard from me till there was blossom on the trees.

In case you hadn't already guessed, I find a white shirt somewhat unremarkable. Yet, styled right, this item will be the most coveted item in this Winter's wardrobe.

Celebs are lining up left, right and centre for a piece of the shirt action. Gwyneth Paltrow tucked her silk shirt into black tailored shorts and teamed it with a metallic clutch, understated black courts and a long pendent necklace. This outfit is effortless sophistication at its best.

Leighton Meester gets double fashion points - pairing her shirt with the season's cargo trousers. Like Leighton, leave a few buttons undone and go for short or rolled up sleeves for day time wear. Add a big bag and statement heels in a muted tone to sex up the look.

A new trend doesn't really exist until Sienna's worn it. Miss Miller modernises the classic shirt and trouser office ensemble, with a military shirt. Gold buttons galore and sharp shoulders glam up the dark trousers. Not one to shy away from attention, Sienna spices things up with a 60s inspired, stack heeled platform. What a beaut!

Topshop have some gorgeous takes and cater for all price bands. Follow in Sienna's footsteps with the Gold Button Military Shirt, £38 or try the Side Tuck Short Sleeve Blouse, £38 to re-create casual chic a la Leighton.

If, like me, you're not quite sure about the white shirt, opt for a patterned or coloured blouse - but remember this look is about quiet sophistication, the cut and fabric is eye-catching enough, a loud print is not needed.

Warehouse have a beautiful navy Swallow Print Blouse, £55. Alternatively, Reiss has some exquisite lace blouses and military shirts ranging from a dove grey to a fuscia pink, starting at £79.

It's time to get hot under the collar!

Style de la semaine

I am loving Victoria Beckham's recent switch to a more relaxed wardrobe. This forest green, sixties-style shift shows Victoria at her best - elegant, sophisticated and looking particularly youthful. The perfect outfit for a meeting in New York city.

It is always a surprise to see Victoria in anything other than sky-high heels, but these monochrome ballet pumps are a cute alternative and the bow ensures they are bang on trend.

As always, the addition of over sized sunnies, gives Victoria that star edge, but her tousled hair keeps the look modern, simple and effective. Wool Crepe Shift Dress, £395, Goat.

Anne Hathaway has upped her game in the fashion stakes, sporting two Winter trends at a recent charity event. Teaming a pleated, 3/4 length leather skirt with a silky white blouse, Anne abandoned her fashion comfort zone.

A flash of nude heels with ankle straps sexed up the look, as did the daring red lippy. Jewellery was kept simple, with a delicate gold pendent necklace and small black watch. Impressive work!

In my eyes, Blake Lively never gets it wrong, and this week's attendance at the Lorraine Schwartz 2BHappy collection launch surely cements her place in 2010's best dressed lists.

Nude has been 'the colour' for so long, that I'm surprised any celebrity would opt to wear it, let alone be able to make it look fresh and new. Yet, Blake did just that in this blush Versace corset dress. The separate silk and shimmering panels emphasised Blake's curves, ensuring all eyes were on her.

Paired with towering chocolate brown strappy Christian Louboutin heels and Lorraine Schwartz droplet earrings, Blake was the essence of glamour. A sleek up-do and bronze toned make-up finished off this sassy but opulent look.

Leopard print... hits the spot

One of my most treasured possessions is a faux-fur leopard print coat from Miss Selfridge. Only purchased last year, this coat is the bearer of numerous compliments, and I cannot wait for the colder climates to breeze in, so I can adorn myself in it once more.

You see, I am a leopard-lover. Currently, my jungle wardrobe includes one silk dress from Warehouse, a floaty Topshop skirt with large pockets and zip detail, a sultry La Senza lingerie set, a somewhat faded T-shirt and a pair of ballet pumps (so old I have no idea of their origin), all in leopard print.

I would go as far as saying that I love leopard more than any other print. Floral is cute and feminine, but it lacks sex appeal. Zebra is quirky and original, but hard to find. Tribal - now this is one that truly rivals leopard, but as striking as it may be it does not carry the charm and daring attitude suggested by a leopard print.

Yet, this print seems to divide the style set quicker than a Team-Monalo vs Team-Choo debate. It is clearly because leopard print can so easily go wrong - there is a very, very fine line between tarty and tasteful. Some fear the print is just too brazen.

That is not something that concerns the felines of the celebrity jungle. Everyone from Sophie Dahl to Lily Allen to Katie Holmes are sporting the trend this winter. And love it or loathe it you will find it difficult to avoid the big cat spots this season. The catwalks for Autumn/Winter 2010 were lavished in the print, and this time is wasn't just the usual suspects taking part. Giorgio Armani made his luxurious and classic tailoring pop with a glimpse of a leopard belt or shoe. Even Dries Van Noten seemed to have a soft spot for leopard ladies, pairing his metallic, slouchy trousers with a leopard printed swing jacket. And my-wardrobe.com has a range of leopard treats including the luscious Kenley Snow Leopard scarf and Kurt Geiger's sexy platform peep toe.

The high street, of course, has also gone leopard mad. ASOS ups the game with 252 items in the exotic print, ranging from Converse Hi-tops to leggings and jumpsuits.

For the faint-hearted among us, my advice is to start small. A simple scarf, a la Sarah Jessica Parker or a cute cross the shoulder bag like Florence. If, like me you don't need to start small, and in fact can't get enough of the print, this winter is the perfect season for you. Make a statement at your Christmas party with a floor length design in the style of Rachel Bilson and Kelly Clarkson. For those who are even more daring, try an original take on the print like Olivia Palermero, who opted for a pink leopard print mini dress and a leopard waist belt.

Venice Film Festival 2010: Best Dressed

This year's Venice Film Festival has seen a real mix of daring or relaxed looks contrasted against the usual, old school glamour and sophistication of the red carpet gowns. Here's my pick of the best of both.

There is no doubt that this is the dress of the festival. Jessica Alba looked picture perfect in this romantic ruffled Valentino Haute couture mini. Jessica kept accessories to a minimum, and only wore dove grey suede heels, a silver clutch and diamond earrings. Red berry lips completed this elegant look.

Natalie Portman set the fashion bar high wearing this draped, crimson Rodarte gown at the premiere for her new film. This intricate dress, embellished with Swarovski crystals, is red carpet glamour at its best. Natalie finished off her classic look with a quilted Dior clutch and beautiful, strappy heels.

I don't know which to mention first! - The chunky biker style heels, or the just-below-the-knee floral frock. Both are too perfect for words. Jessica Alba, mixes in a bit of grunge with this floaty Dolce & Gabbana dress. Her sleek locks complete this edgy, rock-glam look.

It's a daring decision to opt for a mini on the red carpet, especially one with a train. Yet, Jessica Alba looked completely at ease in this duel length, black Valentino dress. Paired with tied up cage heels and a cute topknot, Jessica stole the show at the Machete premiere.

Another brave choice was made by Italian starlet, Jasmine Trinca. The actress arrived at the premiere of new flick, Black Swan wearing a casual Parisian style maxi. The stripes were polished up with a black wallet clutch, a navy waist belt and sparkling necklace and earrings. The outcome... super-groomed and understated. Extra style points deserved!

Isabella Rogonese caused a stir in her floor-skimming, Alberta Ferretti gown. This fairytale-esque dress sighed of old-school romance and glamour, but the monochrome colour scheme kept it fresh and modern. The ruffling is undeniably stunning!

The Emmy's 2010 - Best dressed

There were many a gorgeous and well dressed star at this year's Emmy Awards. But here's my pick of the very best dressed both on the red carpet and at the most glamorous after-show parties.

Mad Men star January Jones stunned in this shimmering sea blue satin gown. Teamed with black classic platforms, this Atelier Versace dress with fitted corset and train was the perfect amount of glamour, originality and sophistication for the event. Truly beautiful.

In a one-shouldered, floaty, lavender Christian Dior dress Emily Blunt ensured that all eyes were on her at this year's awards. This unusual colour choice showed off Emily's pale skin tone perfectly. And the cream sequined embellishment keeps the dress looking modern.
This floor-skimming, navy Oscar de la Renta gown had Glee's Lea Michele catching everyone's eye. The strapless, ruffled gown was full on extravagance and showed off Lea's figure to its best.

In a simple cut floor length gown, Troy actress Rose Bryn opted for classic style. Updated with a gold belt and straps, and a flash of flesh, this white Gucci dress stole the day.

Vampire Diaries actress Nina Dobrev was on trend in this beautiful nude, one shouldered lace gown. Accessorized with elegant drop earrings and a sophisticated up do, this Zuhair Murad creation screams effortless cool.

Anna Paquin opted for an original choice, when she wore this black and gold Alexander McQueen number. The accentuated shoulders and deep neckline added extra detail to the heavy embellishment. Teamed with gold bangles and killer black patent courts, Anna brought a youthful and creative spin to the event.

Hot, hot, hot

At the L.A. premiere for her new film Jessica Alba reminded us of her true style capabilities.

After months of only seeing Alba in floaty tops, skinny jeans and ballet pumps while she escorted her adorable daughter Honor to the local parks; it is refreshing to see her resort back to a fearless style choice of body hugging, thigh skimming dresses.

This metallic zigzag number is particularly mesmerizing, and teamed with black bondage style shoes screams young Hollywood glamour. One thing is very clear - Jess still has it.

Loving Drew's Look!

I've never thought of Drew Barrymore as a style icon before - yes, she's a great actress, yes, she's gorgeous, but no, I've never lusted after her outfits. But that's all starting to change.

Dressed in her best glad-rags, Drew wowed when she arrived for the David Letterman Show this weekend. Kitted out in a Richard Chai sequinned blouse and ankle skimming black trousers by Aussie design duo Camilla and Marc, Drew made sure all eyes were on her. Sleek, stylish and yet original, her look was all about opulence and glamour, and I for one love it!

My only fault - her grey YSL pumps. I know that grey is going to be big this winter, and I am a fan; but for me, it just didn't quite work this time. This is more than made up for by Drew's natural long waves and perfect make-up. Overall: thumbs up!

Julia Roberts, Forty-Two and Fabulous!

All eyes were on Julia Roberts last night at the New York premiere of her new film Eat Prey Love. And it's no surprise. The 42 year old wowed in sexy evening attire, flaunting her enviable pins in black tailored shorts by Diane von Furstenberg teamed with a sophisticated black Stella McCartney blazer. The look was polished off perfectly with strappy satin sandals by Roger Vivier and blue and gold bracelets from Julia's favourite jewellery designer Me & Ro.

The mother of twins was signed as a model for Lancome earlier this year, and after this appearance I wouldn't be surprised if the offers fly in from fashion brands too. The film, prodcued by Brad Pitt, is based on bestselling novel by Elizabeth Gilbert and follows a woman who is newly divorced and decides to travel the world.

The Oscars Best Dressed 2010

This year's Oscars saw Hollywood stars trying something different. Rather than the usual one-colour simple gown, this was the year for extravagance. There were ruffles, trains, sequins, florals - individuality was key. Here's my pick of the best:

Diane Kuger looked stunning in this black and cream, pleated and ruffled Chanel creation. The intricate detail of the glittering appliquéd flowers around the collar is true red carpet extravagance.

The romantic trend was alive and strong at this year's awards as Zoe Saldana walked the red carpet in an enchanting Givenchy dress. The sparkling bodice and every-shade-of-purple ruffled trail were a sign of true glamour.

The Time Traveller's Wife star Rachel McAdams looked heavenly in this sumptuous, romantic Elie Saab couture number. The voluminous gown featured a latticed bodice and the dusty blue and grey shades added an original rock-chick edge to the gown.

Actress Elizabeth Banks made sure all eyes were on her as she made her way down the red carpet in a pale grey, strapless gown by Versace. The figure hugging design stayed on trend with a ruffled trailing skirt.

One of the best dressed at this year's event had to be Maggie Gyllenhaal. Her Dries Van Noten column dress with its striking blue tropical print made sure she stood out in the crowd.

Sandra Bullock showed off her curves in a shimmering Marchesa gown, with a sheer, floral embroidered bodice and dramatic train. The winner of the Best Actress category kept the focus on her floor length dress by sticking to simple accessories, wearing only pearl drop earrings and a delicate bracelet.

Miley Cyrus edges her way onto the style list in this fairytale Jenny Packham gown. The champagne coloured silk bustier, high-waisted sequined skirt, swooping back and blood red nails create an ever-so-sexy take on a classic showbiz look.

Demi Moore wowed on the red carpet as she worked the romance trend, wearing a nude ruffled gown by Atelier Versace.

Style Crush: Diane Kruger

Diane Kruger just doesn't get it wrong. She is undoubtedly the Queen of the red carpet, showcasing quietly sophisticated gowns, often with a modern and quirky twist.

As with every woman there are looks she goes back to time and again - vintage inspired items, monochrome palettes and blush coloured ball gowns. But there is never any sense that we're seeing something we've been shown before; there is always something new and intriguing about each garment. This is the beauty of Diane's style - original, understated and utterly cool.

The key to her fashion success is intelligent accessorising. Diane keeps things simple - a thin belt or one statement bracelet paired with a chic box clutch is all she needs.

She deserves extra style points for her fearless use of colour - fuschia pink, mustard yellow, bright red and royal blue are amongst her recent style quests.

A favourite with designers Karl Lagerfeld and Roberto Cavalli, she is often spotted on the front row at Fashion week. Diane has no quandary when it comes to testing out the new season's biggest trends - the androgynous look, bodycon, one-shouldered dresses, boho, grunge, tailoring, prints, ruffles and pastels are just a few of the latest trends she has sported.

Yet with Ms Kruger there is no attention grabbing behaviour; the clothes are allowed to speak for themselves. And speak volumes they do. She has a natural flair for fashion; an ability to wear any trend, make it her own, and always looks incredible. Even the more outrageous designer gowns are worn with effortless ease. This is surely the making of a style icon.

Even Diane's make-up and hair is flawless. Smoky eyes and natural lips are her signature look for showbiz events, and her blond locks are often swept back into a loose but beautiful up-do - truly the work of a pro.

And she can pull off the perfect daytime look too. A real girl's girl, in summer Diane opts for a cute dress, and simple grey cardi, again with minimum accessories. And for winter, she hottens things up by teaming over-the-knee boots with a short checked dress.

Oh, Diane Kruger, how I love thee.
